Job search: It’s either feast or famine

The one thing that I hoped would not happen has now occurred: I received two job offers this week, one on Tuesday, the other one on Thursday. They both have their advantages and their drawbacks. The biggest drawback of the one is a long commute of 170 km per day (85km back and forth), the drawback of the other is poor pay (about 400 Euro less after taxes, and no contribution to my pension for four months) and the prospect that the company might not be around for too long.

Oh dear, how I hate situations like these.

  1. hm… would you ever consider moving closer to the long-commute job in the future? 170km each day might be ok at first, but long-term this kind of thing is unbearable (it would be for me). Alternatively, you could live there during the week, and only get back to Vienna at the week-ends.

  2. I thought about that briefly – but keeping up two flats is pretty expensive.

Anyhow, I ‘resigned’ from the non-commute job – I don’t think that project has a long-term perspective. So academia it is!
