yes, I’ve lived in africa for 20 months. have you actually read my blog post? because you sound like you thought I denied that AIDS was a major issue in africa.

have you ever been to africa? have you ever lived there? i do and i have seen first hand the spread of hiv and aids. condoms in africa are incredibly cheap and free in many places yet the belief that it is “contaminated” by the evil white man keeps people from using it. the “god would never let me get hiv” keeps people from using it. the insanly high prevalence of one night stands, “friends with benifits”, multiple g/f or b/f, rapes, and the idea that frequenting protitutes is nothing to be ashamed of has caused this huge bloom of infection. come down here and ask around, you’ll find people who are no older then 25 who are proud, PROUD of the fact they have had 30+ sexual partners so far in thier life. there was a girl who was interviewed in my town who bragged about having 4 men a day for almost 3 years thats 5000 men. and she is proud! changing the ideas on sex is the only way to stem the spread of the disease!

meanwhile (even though I wrote the blogpost before Zuma) I am not as worried anymore – everyone in RSA seems to be pretty excited about having the world cup. hopefully that’ll help.

I have no doubt you are right that people (visitors) may die as a result of crime in SA during 2010 – it is after all the crime capital of the world and there will be millions of visitors during this period. However I think the situation is deliberately exaggerated by those who could benefit from the exaggeration …. I picked up your blog link as a “possibly related post” at the bottom of mine when I commented on the German Football Feds security consultants recommending bullet-proof vest for the players!
