My first exclusive reading
June 25, 2007 at 10:35 am | In Friends, Literature | 5 CommentsTags: encouragement, happy bunny, Reading
Yesterday my first exclusive*) reading took place, organized by two friends and colleagues of mine. If these friends didn’t exist, and had I not mentioned the fact that I write to them, then I doubt that I would ever have submitted anything to a writing competition. I would not have been invited to Berlin and Brandenburg and of course the reading would not have taken place either. Thank you again, Susanne and Greg, for making this possible! I’m a very happy bunny right now:-)

I read the piece that I had submitted to the writing competition and another one, a new one. I was nervous only for seconds, and then found it surprisingly easy to read to this audience of approximately 20-25 people. Putting on the author’s persona was facile, it was so easy that I even managed to entertain the audience in the break between the two pieces that I read. But the best part was the feedback I got from the audience after the reading, the personal feedback, the many encouraging words I received that asked me to keep writing, the thoughts that people offered about the texts and what they had stirred in them. Yes, I am really determined to turn at least one of these pieces into a novel soon:-)
*) Exclusive in the sense of: nobody else was reading, and the people that came had come because they had received an invitation with my name and face on it.

I accidentally emptied a glass of water on my parquet floor before leaving on Thursday morning and the wood is now drying, making all sorts of weird noises…

A digest of Teemu Leinonen’s key note
June 22, 2007 at 9:51 am | In Uncategorized | 1 CommentTags: Education, micro2007, Microlearning2007, PBL, Problem Based Learning, Teemu Leinonen
To begin with an anecdote: Teemu Leinonen was born in Nokia, Finland.
“Any true understanding is dialogic in nature.” Mikhail Bakhtin
3 metaphors of learning:
_ knowledge as acquisition > internet as content repository, information that is ‘out there’ and can be acquired
_knowledge as participation > formal (school etc.) vs informal learning (with a self-defined goal or need)
_missed the last one… had something to do with cultivation of knowledge (learning as culture?)
TEACHER - creates context
STUDENTS - define their own research questions and devise hypotheses which they evaluate critically
etc etc
Before I recapitulate all: This reminds me a lot of Problem-Based Learning (PBL)… even if not intentionally… I’m going to say a few things about Problem-Based Learning in Language Teaching here, 3-6 July 2007.
Learning environments:
_me and my computer
_we and someone’s virtual world
_we and our world (and the technology in it)
Ivan Illich: “A good educational system should have three purposes: it should provide all who want to learn with access to available resources at any time in their lives; empower all who want to share what they know to find those who want to learn it from them; and, finally, furnish all who want to present an issue to the public with the opportunity to make their challenge known. Such a system would require the application of constitutional guarantees to education. Learners should not be forced to submit to an obligatory curriculum, or to discrimination based on whether they possess a certificate or a diploma. Nor should the public be forced to support, through a regressive taxation, a huge professional apparatus of educators and buildings which in fact restricts the public’s chances for learning to the services the profession is willing to put on the market. It should use modern technology to make free speech, free assembly, and a free press truly universal and, therefore, fully educational.” [source]
Alan Kay: “Don’t worry about what anybody else is going to do… The best way to predict the future is to invent it. Really smart people with reasonable funding can do just about anything that doesn’t violate too many of Newton’s Laws!”

Quick hello from Innsbruck

I’m in the middle of the microlearning conference, and believe it or not: I am a convert. Twitter DOES actually work, in particular in environments like these. While the first two keynotes were presented, people commented on what was being said by the speakers - only that you couldn’t hear them. But the comments offered different views on the talk, maybe views that otherwise would not have been expressed, publicly. Of course it only works if you have a certain community of people who share interests - they have to have at least one thing in common. Obvious disadvantage: It also draws attention away from the speakers, as - even if multi-tasking - you cannot divide your attention between different things. You’re either writing or reading a twitter message or listening to the talk. That may lead to semi-attentive audiences - so as a presenter, you have to be prepared for that (and not be offended if that happens).
Btw, when we were on the train this morning, my two colleagues and I made jokes about how we would immediately take pictures and upload them to our blogs - and that’s what I am doing right now. Harr! (Pictures taken with iSight; my MacBook stopped making those velcro noises).
Liquid filled noomies (numies?)
June 21, 2007 at 8:54 am | In Uncategorized | 3 CommentsTags: Frank, Kenny, Liquid filled, noomies, numies, Ronny, South Park, Zappa
I’m still looking for a way to cool my Mac. If there are liquid filled glass pipes for the consumption of marijuana, why can’t there be liquid filled pedestals for computers?
By the way: I don’t know the meaning of the word noomies. It’s another favourite English word. I first encountered it in this song by Frank Zappa, Let’s make the water turn black, and I believe it’s something like toys, nic-nacs. Anybody who knows the truth around? It could also mean boogers, I think.
Now believe me when I tell you that my song is really true
I want everyone to listen and believe
It’s about some little people from a long time ago
And all the things the neighbors didn’t know Early in the morning
Daddy Dinky went to work
Selling lamps & chairs to San Ber’dino squares
And I still remember Mama with her apron & her pad
Feeding all the boys at Ed’s Cafe!
Whizzing & pasting & pooting through the day
(Ronnie helping Kenny helping burn his poots away!)
And all the while on a shelf in the shed:
KENNY’S LITTLE CREATURES ON DISPLAY!
Ronnie saves his numies on a window in his room
(A marvel to be seen: dysentery green)
While Kenny & his buddies had a game out in the back:
LET’S MAKE THE WATER TURN BLACK
We see them after school in a world of their own
(To some it might seem creepy what they do…)
The neighbors on the right sat & watched them every night
(I bet you’d do the same if they was you)
Whizzing & pasting & pooting through the day
(Ronnie helping Kenny helping burn his poots away!)
And all the while on a shelf in the shed:
KENNY’S LITTLE CREATURES ON DISPLAY!
Ronnie’s in the Army now & Kenny’s taking pills
Oh! How they yearn to see a bomber burn!
Color flashing, thunder crashing, dynamite machine!
(Wait till the fire turns green…
wait till the fire turns green)
WAIT TILL THE FIRE TURNS GREEN
Does everyone agree with these lyrics? I thought mama was waiting with her apron and her PAN, that Ronny helped Kenny burn his BOOTS away, and I would never have spelled noomies NUMIES. Did the South Park makers think of this song when they created Kenny?
